Hey,
Just download skype static(not dynamic).
It will just work out of the box.
The sounds will need some tweaking(install path) but it will
serve your purpose.
Check the mic, recording is a pain .
Otherwise it will work on any Linux.
But on Ubuntu perhaps installing the DEB would be the best idea in
case you don't have dependency issues.

The Skype download page does not list Ubuntu 8.10.
install it. I have not validated this in ubuntu, but its there in my mint,
which is based out of ubuntu.
