bash but not gnu bash????? Most likely you are seeing an older bash
version (2.03 or maybe an 1.x version) that just doesn't work the same
way your latest bash shell works.
Then the termcap file in solaris could do with some improvement so you
don't get all the pretty colors you get on your fedora core 1 or even
debian box without a little work.
The default shell is csh, which is a lot more powerful than you think it
is. Alternatively you could be looking at the plain old bourne shell,
or the korn shell.
If what you have is an old SunOS (even before it became Solaris 2.6)
that's a thing of beauty, though not one that you'd let onto the
internet without extensive patching and firewalling.
As for CDE, please speak for yourself about it being "ugly", My XFCE
desktop has a CDE theme, and I rather like it, personally speaking.

CDE, in this thread, so it saves me repeating it all.
