A couple of details I missed...
1.) Import and place at  x0,y0. This will put the text right where you
placed it originally.
2.) Make sure the text has the desired line width before outputting,
otherwise it's the default in the artwork control form.

Try creating the text on a new subclass (something unique, that no other
entities are on), and create the text in the position you want it. 
Create and artwork control file to output that text only.
Read in the artwork file to the etch layer you want it. It comes in as
lines. 
Edit the shape and void elements, lines only. 
Delete the lines after filling the shape. 
Voila.
