Why cdan't we make sugestions without having to deffend them to the gills? So be it then. If you are selling a product, you want the product to get the most sales it can get. If I were purchasing for a government agency I would dissallow the icon because it does not meet the standards of accessibility. The fed and the states that support the regulations as well as many other entities will only purchase products which allow them to comply with those regulations. The icon/ bp currently do not fall into this category.
I think I asked for braille support a while back and got shot down before but we have it now so why shoot the messenger? I'm only expressing the desires of many who are not on the list and who have expressed this to me and others. This is not my opinion, it is fact. More sales would be gained providing much needed capitol to make te products even more superb than they already are.
I'll say no more on this topic. On Apr 22, 2009, at 9:16 AM, ryan wrote:No, No, I don't think that sighted people should be able to see what's happening on the Icon or Braille-plus. What does it matter anyway, they don't use it so what is there reasons why they would want to see whats going on. On Wed, 22 Apr 2009 06:58:25 -0400, David

Sighted people are not purchasing icons primarily because they don't have video capability. In other words, many products for the blind are purchased by sighted people for blind people. I remember an evolution in a product I will not name where a lot of the stuff that was not shown was written so that it was shown because the sighted folk making the decisions were shying away from the product because this stuff was not shown. I am not advocating an screen. A display would be helpful perhaps a usb one but what we need is the ability to connect to a monitor (usb again), and the ability to process video content for a variety of reasons. This has been a high priority since before the inception of the ICon/ bp for many people. Another reason for it is that there are lots of folk out there making the transition from screen to speech, they would benefit from the ability to use video while making that transition. If in fact they are not, do we need flat screens on them so as to lower their anxiety? Somehow, I don't think so. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Poehlman" <poehlman1@xxxxxxxxxxxTo: <icon-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 8:31 AM Subject: [icon-discuss] icon/bp future a suggestion:I read this morning that a new digital tv transmission capability is coming for handhelds. I therefore reitterate my earlier suggestion for this and other reasons: We need display and video reproduction capability on the icon. One thing that makes sighted folk nervous about the icon is that they cannot see what is going on. if we give them that and if we can get this new tv on our icon/bps, that would be a great selling point along with printing and embossing capability, gps and cell access. -- Jonnie Appleseed with his Hands-On Technolog(eye)s reducing technology's disabilities one byte at a time If you reply to this message it will be delivered to the original sender only.
