My 2 cents on Redmond Linux: I'm a somewhat computer-challenged Linux
user. I installed Redmond Linux when it was still Redmond Linux (it's
now called Lycoris) and like it. It's the only distribution I've used
that looked good right off the bat, even the fonts in web browswers
looked good. It's configured in a way that is easy to understand and
use for someone new to Linux. The base installation doesn't include
development tools but they're easily installed from a second cd. My
only real problem was that the included CD burning software, KonCD,
wouldn't work. The problem must have something to do with my hardware,
most reviews and forum comments I've read indicate that it works OK, at
least for some people. They have an online update wizard where you can
download upgrades, and they recently released Upgrade 2. My experience
with Upgrade 2 has been infinitely less positive. I tried upgrading
online and reinstalled with iso's from a cd and both times my monitor
display was flashing like a strobe light, even though it correctly
identified my video card. The only way I could make it work was with the
included "generic video driver" option and it was really ugly. I think
you could probably make it work with some tweaking but this is supposed
to be an easy to use distribution. I've since reinstalled my original
Redmond Linux. I've heard good things about Upgrade 2 so maybe these
problems are confined to certain systems but it bugs me that it works
worse than it used to on _any_ system. The new upgrade includes
Lycoris's software library that's supposed to provide trouble-free
package installation wich sounds like a good deal, but if I can't get it
to install it doesn't do me much good. Maybe they'll get some of their
problems worked out in the future, hope so. Meanwhile, I understand
that Red Hat is making a real effort to make their new releases easy to
use, I've read some very positive reviews. Good luck, I'd like to hear
about RH7.3 if you or somebody else tries it. Dale
