The key card system is likely a lower frequency (LF or HF from the
first link's perspective) RFID system than the credit card RFID system
which is either UHF or HF. UHF frequencies are blocked fairly easily.
For example put your bluetooth headset on one side of your body and
your phone on the other, there's a good chance the sound will drop.
HF and LF are not blocked as easily.

What type of card readers are used at the club?
The reason I ask is that I recently got a new wallet that is RFID shielded.

I keep my HSA access card inside my wallet and Wednesday night, without
thinking, I just held up my wallet to the card reader at the door going
directly into the indoor range and got the beep and the green light. It
just dawned on me that maybe that was not supposed to happen.
