Hi Sorry for the rude email I sent you. I did not realise you were a real person. I thought (obviously did not really read the address) that you were just an HP Marketing person and fair game You are right about the contact list , calendar and email being the focus of PocketPC I thought the email would be effective, but so far, as I said, I have not convinced myself that people who are not regular PC users would really take to email on a handheld I think they are easy to learn for an existing PC user who knows what "real" Windows looks like, and can make the necessary adjustments, but idiosyncratic for a non-PC user. And the darn thing crashes all the time! I have to reset its memory around once a day of active using (this does not cause any memory loss, by the way), and the CDMA G-Tran card sometimes gets forgotten and needs to be removed and re-inserted: Again, not ready for a less technical user to take on the road, away from IT support Mark Lockett Business Analyst, Schneider Electric, Christchurch, New Zealand Ph: +64 (3) 338 9059 Fax: +64 (3) 339 1702 DDI: +64 (3) 339 1740 Mobile: 021 1944 500 "David Fraser" <david_nz@xxxxxxxxxx> To: <hp.encompass.nz@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: cc: hp.encompass.nz-bounce@fr Subject: [hp.encompass.nz] Re: A real quick survey of HP Encompass members about eelists.org mobility technology 2003/02/19 15:42 Please respond to hp.encompass.nz Hey. Thanks Mark. Yeah I know how people feel about marketing type surveys. I am involved in implementing a number of applications that rely on mobile data input and output over wireless networks. That's why the questions. The PDA market however still seems focused on diary and contact list type applications rather than the importance of roaming and linkages to back office systems. The telco wireless solutions are not great at Mount Maunganui. I am not sure if the problems we have are due to insufficient capacity within the cell site or just location. We have an extensive narrow band wireless network operating in two locations based on Teklogix gear. Works well be very expensive. Our interest in PDAs like Ipac or Symbol is to use them to replace the Teklogix. Arguments for are lower capital cost. Arguments against are cost and reliability of network traffic and lack of ruggardisation. I you have any questions that you want to survey the members on bounce them back to this list. I am using both, and they both disconnect regularly after a few minutes inactivity, and the reconnect time is significant (much better than a land-line modem: but a landline modem is faster, generally). I have evaluated an iPaq myself in the last 12 months I am not recommending the technology for general use. The screen is simply too small to be able to get a lot of work done It does not have enough to replace the laptop, and if we have to carry a laptop (bigger screen) and an ipaq and a mobile phone (decent battery life), it gets a bit much I was hoping the ipaq could replace the laptop and the phone for users with less technical requirements An area we may investigate is with customised software and a barcode scanner in the warehouse conventional handheld barcodes scanner devices are very expensive, and require no less bespoke programming than writing a program for the barcode reader kind regards Mark Lockett Business Analyst, Schneider Electric, Christchurch, New Zealand Ph: +64 (3) 338 9059 Fax: +64 (3) 339 1702 DDI: +64 (3) 339 1740 Mobile: 021 1944 500 Jonathan Mckeown <jonmc@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: hp.encompass.nz@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent by: cc: hp.encompass.nz-bounce@fr Subject: [hp.encompass.nz] A real quick survey of HP Encompass members about mobility eelists.org technology 2003/02/19 09:53 Please respond to hp.encompass.nz Hello.
