I personally don't think this should be part of R1. I mean R1 has pretty much always been considered a remake of R5. So x86_64 doesn't make sense, but of course I'm a bit biased here... I think development should start now if we want anything stable for R2. I mean look how awful the first x86_64 versions of windows were.
