All right, I guess I will desist, until an image with a working
compiler becomes available.

Who knows, maybe nothing would have come of it anyway, I was just
going to look at some changes that were made with the ahci controller
around the time the trouble began.  I think that problem has to be
fixed before the Alpha release anyway, so it looks like a moot point
for me.
