#5250: Unable to change resolution - vm86_do_int failed

While using the Screen Preferences to change the resolution I get an error
windows with "The screen mode could not be set General system error" I
get this error message switching either resolution, colors or both from
 the default 1400x1050 15bit color.

 See the syslog file attached.

The ati and vesa drivers are loaded according to listimage. Also tried
removing the vesa driver which made no difference.

 I'm using r34909 on "device 4c46: Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x". The M3 is a
Rage128 based video chip not Radeon.

Note the default 1400x1050 resolution comes up great by default, but I
would like to be able to zoom in.
