Interestingly, technomancy on freenode #emacs makes his own ergo
keyboard kit, the Atreus. It's designed to be one-piece so you can
put it in your lap, ergodox-derived but with other modifications.
Does require soldering, but has not-as-tiny parts, to be easier to
assemble than the ergodox.

It looks interesting and maybe I'll build one someday, but I need
something sooner, my elbow's banged up, by something unrelated to
computer use, but normal keyboard use seems to aggravate it something
fierce.
Largely it seems due to the need to twist my forearm (turn my hand
palm down) and bring my hands close together, which seems to put a lot
of stress on the tendons that feed into my elbow joint (from the
flexor/pronator, if I'm reading the anatomy right).
I've been reading reviews of ergonomic keyboards with an eye towards
split/tilted keyboards. A friend recommends the Kinesis KB500 or some
variation and I'm leaning towards trying that out.
It's not fully split like the Kinesis Freestyle or similar, which was
my initial thought, for maximum freedom in controlling spacing and
angle. But the KB500 it looks like the spacing is wide enough that it
might do, and I like to place my keyboard on my lap, which will work
better with a single piece keyboard.
My hands naturally fall about 14" apart, that is, there's a 14" gap
between the inner edges of my hands when I rest them naturally. The
entire Kinesis is only 16.5" wide, so the gap cannot be wide enough
for where my hands naturally fall, though it might be wide enough to
work for me. Dammit, now I'm talking myself into trying the Kinesis
Freestyle :-).
I did have odd thoughts about building groovy hi-tech ergonomic swing
arms for the two halves of a fully split keyboard...
