A suggestion: I've been wanting to play with the Matrix chat service:
https://matrix.org/
I could set up a server and we'll see if people use it and how well it
works. That way a) our infrastructure remains open source, b) it's
under our control and c) it can be a supplement to the mailing list
instead of a replacement for it. And if it doesn't end up being useful,
it's no big deal.

The board has also been discussing a way for people to communicate the fact that they are at the shop. This would be voluntary. I cannot stress this point enough. The privacy of our members is extremely important, and will never be compromised.
Currently you can see if the shop is open or closed on the website. This lets you know that someone is there. But if two people are trying to meet up to discuss something at the shop, and lets say they dont have each other's phone numbers yet, it may be useful to let others know that you are at the shop.
Long story short, one way we could do this is with a live chat. As Jake said, sometimes the mailing list is too slow, and by the time you arrive at the shop, the person you wanted to meet, already left. If we had a live chat, we could communicate in real time.
However I do not mean IRC for reasons which have already been stated. There are many other options. Its 2017, there are over 9000 live chat solutions on the net.
Would anyone be interested in a live chatroom? (But not IRC)

I am interested in the historic context of the HackPGH forum.
Pinging Matt Stultz or other founding members. I am curious if
something happened which caused us to move away from that.
I have moderated multiple video game and other topic forums in the
past. Its really easy to set one up. Forums also usually have an
option to have a live chat.
We kind of already do have a forum via meetup.

<https://www.meetup.com/HackPittsburgh/messages/boards/>
Few people have been using it, but its there.
The only problem I would have with a forum, is the mailing list is
easy to remember to check, you check your email anyway, so you
automatically see the mailing list messages when you check your
email. A forum, you need to remember to sign in.
I think google groups would be as easy to check as the mailing
list, but would be more secure though.
As far as slack, I have been using slack for a while now, and
personally I love it.

After a quick search of the website it looks like we already
do have a forum that was closed in 2011, so maybe we have a
historical reason against doing things that way?

Rather than just a Slack or Google Group would it make
sense to have a forum hosted on the website? I'm still
relatively new, but it seems like most of the mailing list
discussions have a specific topic and if someone has a new
topic to discuss, they create a new thread. This format
seems to lend itself better to a forum which can be broken
down hierarchically into subforums (e.g. 3D printing,
machining, news, Software club, etc).
Having subforums would also eliminate the need for
everyone to get an email about something they might not be
directly interested in. Peope who are interested in email
updates could subscribe to subforums or posts they want to
keep up with.
After a brief Google search it looks like there's
definitely some Open Source and/or free forum software
available to use. The forum could also be made public or
private depending on people's preferences.
Then additionally, as Jake mentioned, we could choose a
form of realtime communication for quick messaging like
Slack, Hangouts, IRC, etc.

My thoughts on the subject:
- I like having a mailing list, although I would
prefer to have one for members only or non-public facing.
- I would like to have a slack option available if
people would use it. It would be nice for realtime
communication. It kind of stinks when you're trying to
communicate "I forgot my shop key can anyone let me
in" over multiple minute back and forth list emails.
- Although open source would be preferred I have
nothing against using slack. Being able to receive
email notifications or pings from a slack channel has
been useful for me in other groups. I think there are
some opensource options like ?Rocketchat? but there
might be supportability issues if we tried hosting it
ourselves.

list to Slack or Google Groups
I would prefer that stuff is not publically
accessable, but ability to search past and send
attachments is useful. Ability to check this with the
rest of my email is easiest way to stay engaged.
I have heard of irc and slack countless times but have
never been exposed to either so I am ignorant of what
they actually are or why I should care about them. I
know in passing they are communications technologies,
and that irc has been around decades. I have no
interest in learning more about either unless it would
be personally useful to me in a new or
cryptographically safe way.
Given my technological involvement is low with
computers compared to many members it may be safe to
consider my opinion the uninformed masses?
Not sure if this helps or hinders. tldr response- make
it easy and useful without having to change much
unless we can make it more private.

Great! The board can handle this from here. They
can tell us the results
of the contact at the members meeting.
