Scanners produce image files only. There is no way your screen reader can interpret an image file directly. You need some kind of optical character recognition software. While Kurzweil and Open Book are very costy, other programs such as Text Bridge are fairly inexpensive. They do not offer all the fancy doo-dads of the big programs, but they will work as long as your source document is in pretty good shape.
