JAWS does use default scripts for almost everything, but not
application-specific scripts. It is not uncommon to download a program
of interest from the Internet that does not have scripts associated with
it in the JAWS installation directories. Such programs can work
acceptably if they primarily use standard Windows controls, which the
default JAWS scripts understand. Otherwise, the user needs
application-specific scripts.
If one knows that custom scripts are needed, then an investigation can
be made into what version of JAWS and what version of the application
should be installed for maximally compatible scripts. Sometimes,
upgrading JAWS is necessary, which can be financially significant.
Sometimes, getting an earlier version of the application will provide
better results. Occasionally, one has inadvertently corrupted or
substantively altered the set of application-specific scripts making
them no longer work as intended, and so the JAWS repair utility or a
re-installation should be run.
Thus, if one knows that application-specific scripts are needed,
provided by Freedom Scientific or otherwise, then one is in a more
informed position to diagnose the cause of an inaccessibility
experience, and find the best overall solution.

when jaws already has scripts, scripts are not needed when scripts are
required for an app, the implication is that they are not available in
jaws.
Jaws uses scripts for everything.

without further explanation. Now, it is acknowledged that scripts are,
indeed, needed for best access to Adobe Reader. I agree that such
scripts are bundled with JAWS, but submit, as before, that it is
important to get the latest versions of JAWS and Adobe Reader for
maximum compatibility. I did not say that one had to get the scripts
elsewhere, and would have done so if that were the case, consistent with
my attempt to provide detailed answers to the questions. If that was
unclear, then one of the follow-up questions would probably have been
where to get the scripts.
It is misleading to suggest that scripts are not required, as if the
application uses mainly standard Windows controls so that customized
support is unnecessary. In fact, Adobe Reader is quite nonstandard as a
Windows application because it is built from a code base designed for
multiple operating systems.

True, but there is a difference between requiring scripts and bundling
them.
Scripts are not needed because they are already there.

JAWS 5.10 includes the script file "Adobe Acrobat.jss" and associated
files. Given the quirkiness of using Adobe Reader even with the scripts
that get automatically loaded, I certainly recommend that people use
them. Screen readers, including JAWS and Window-Eyes, have done much
custom coding to work with Adobe Reader.

Yes, JAWS scripts are needed for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader, and the
best access available is to be gained by using the latest, 5.10 version
of JAWS.
You can update from version 6.01 to 6.02 of Adobe Reader by choosing the
Update option of the Help menu. You can also install version 6.02 by
downloading it from access.adobe.com -- I suggest uninstalling prior
versions first.
You can prevent the program from automatically checking for updates by
choosing the Preferences option of the Edit menu, navigating to the
Updates tab page, setting update checking to manual and unchecking
automatic notifications. I also suggest unchecking the "view in
browser" option within Web settings.
If you want to be able to read continuously through a whole document,
not just through a page, then you will also need to go to the Reading
settings and uncheck the option about serving a screen reader a page at
a time. The best text rendering of the document will come from another
setting called "infer reading order," but that process will also take an
annoying length of time for large documents.
