george, I am using windows explorer. I want to print a pdf file to the
freedom import printer. I've done this before by activating the print
dialog while focused on the file I want to "print". Te dialog asks me to
choose my printer. Now though, the dialog just prints.

We may be talking at crossed purposes here.
SOME programs will only print to the default printer. What
program are you using here?

It is possible or at least it used to be possible to have
the print dialog ask you to choose a printer. I used to be
able to do this by specifying no default printer but now I
do not have that option. In other words, as you say, the
first printer you install is default and the only way you
can change it is to select another default printer.

Basically, you cannot have no printer. The printer list is
presented to you in alphabetical order, and so the only way
say start listing from the beginning is to select whatever
comes first in the list as default.
