Hi Molly--

My wife and I live near Binghamton and we built our straw bale home (last
year) with a conventional construction loan from NBT Bank. They were fairly
accommodating as long as we could get a building permit from the town.
Actually, as far as the bank was concerned, we didn't draw attention to the
straw bale part of the design. We did have to hire an architect to
"professionalize" our blueprints so the town code enforcement official would
issue a permit. The plans were stamped by the architect so the town seemed
satisfied. Clark Sanders, up near Oneonta, had some trouble getting a
permit for one of his straw bale buildings and then went up a level to the
regional building code official who approve it. Apparently, this man is also
in charge of this area. If you run into trouble locally, you could always go
to this regional guy--sorry I don't have his name for you.

Definitely look into NBT Bank. Their main office is in Norwich. They've now
provided loans for at least two separate straw bale projects in upstate NY.

Good luck--
Paul Manuszewski
