I've already used MyWay Light, an app by Swiss Federation of the Blind, to
plot routes in open spaces, parks etc. In route creation mode, i.e. when
first doing the route with a sighted guide, you drop way points
intermittently by shaking the phone - simple. The way points are labled
sequentially and if you want to, you can edit the lables. In route
following mode, the phone announces in which clock-direction the next
waypoint is and the distance, also vibrating when the phone points to it.
Once you reach the waypoint, the next one is tracked. Really handy app, and
has not taken off for some reason or other, maybe to do with the interface
not being programmed by English speakers.

Yes, I do understand that dropping a pin or a way-point will only get me to
the vicinity of the location and that's fine.
I'm actually combining this with another goal of mine. I love to surf and
boogy board but can't always tell when I'm drifting up or down the coast
line so I intend to waterproof the iPhone and then use it to guide me back
toward my starting location beyond the breakers. I did look at the Seeing
Eye GPS features and didn't see this feature so am very glad to see it is
available. Direction and distance are quite good enough.

Hello Michael,
Before I answer your email, I would like to clear up what you mean by pin.
If by pin, you mean that you can record a point and then accurately find
that point within a foot or so, then I would caution the following. The
nature of GPS is that you cannot actually pinpoint your location, it can get
pretty close if the accuracy is great, but this isn't always the case. It
is best to picture a point with a 10-30 foot bubble around it.
If by pin, you mean simply recording a point of interest (POI) so that you
can get back within the vicinity of that POI, then this can be accomplished
with the Seeing Eye GPS app as well. We recently added the ability to
record your own user points within the app. To navigate to this POI without
a route, you would select it and select the Getting Warmer route mode. This
gives you a constant announcement of the distance and direction to your POI.
We don't have the vibrate feature that you mention.

I'm looking for an accurate gps application that will allow me to drop a pin
and then know the direction and distance of the pin. There was a group
working on an app three or four years ago but they disappeared.
I know that I can drop pins with Apple Maps but then can't get a simple
direction to the pin. I plan on using this outside of street environments
so don't need directions, just the compass or other directional information.
What would be ideal would be that when I turn my phone around, it would
vibrate when I was facing the direction of the pin.
Any ideas?
