Michael,
I'm not sure if you can use a third-party app to drop pins, but I just heard
about an app called overthere that does what you describe. It apparently
uses Google maps.

Subject: [gps-talkusers] gps pin navigation
I'm looking for an accurate gps application that will allow me to drop a pin
and then know the direction and distance of the pin. There was a group
working on an app three or four years ago but they disappeared.
I know that I can drop pins with Apple Maps but then can't get a simple
direction to the pin. I plan on using this outside of street environments
so don't need directions, just the compass or other directional information.
What would be ideal would be that when I turn my phone around, it would
vibrate when I was facing the direction of the pin.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
