Wow. What a lot of comment on this topic.

First, regarding sailing, changing to directions by degrees can be handy as
you can hear that your destination is 10 degrees left and you can adjust
accordingly. Changing to Naught can also be helpful. We can do that.

As far as flying, these and other features can also be useful. I find the
most interesting thing just to know what cities I am over, how far my
destination is and the speed and altitude. If you don't have maps for the
whole country or you don't know what region you are over, the GNIS and other
POIs will still trigger. You'd be amazed how many mines and wells there are
in Montana and Wyoming.

It is true that Southwest used to be the only airline that did not list GPS
as one of the devices not permitted. That is no longer the case. Although as
it is pointed out, GPS is passive, so is an AM or FM radio and they are not
allowed. If you were using a Bluetooth receiver, technically, it would not
be permitted because of the Bluetooth transceiver, not just the GPS.

I used to have a note written on the back of a Braille business card which I
would ask the flight attendant to give to the pilot. Don't ask the flight
attendant for permission. Ask the pilot and they will say yes most of the
time. It is a fun way to pass the time while flying.
