Hi John, yes sometimes I use an external speaker, sometimes just an earphone if I am not crossing streets. It's really important to pay more attention to your surroundings then your GPS even though you can get so much info from it. The manual even cautions you about that. I know it's kind of hard to get started but hang in their you will get going! Best of luck, Jim

Hi John, that's the set up I am using and it works just great!
Only thing
is that when you are out and about, it's hard to hear the
whimpky
voicenote speaker. However, you can buy small powered speakers
that you
can put in your shirt pocket or on the strap that work alright.
