Subject: [gps-talkusers] Consumer Electronics Show

I thought I'd give you a few teasers regarding technology I have seen here at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. For the past several years, I have done an audio summary of the show published in Playback Magazine and [posted on the Sendero site. You can check out some of those past reports. They are about 20 minutes in length and can be found under the cool products link.

Tonight was the unveiled show for the press and I saw lots of very cool technology. I might even go a bit far afield and tell you about a few things if I have time over the next 3 days I am here.

Regarding navigation, there were two items of note. Auto Page has a unit that connects to your car's computer system via a port under the steering column. You then install an application on your cell phone and you can learn from that application where the car is, how fast it is going and can even view where it is at any time. This isn't the first of such devices. There is a subscription fee for these units, usually around $10 per month.

A new device was a satellite based tracking unit from Spot Inc. It was a rugged unit about the size of a cell phone and it communicates your position via satellite to an Internet page where the subscriber can view where the carrier of the unit is located anywhere in the world. The portable unit does not tell the user where they are. This would be great for tracking a hiker or sailor. It costs $150 per year plus the initial cost of the unit around $150.

You can get some messages on the hand-held unit and it has a 911 button for emergencies. The come and get me button.

Stay tuned for more details in my CES report posted in a couple weeks.

Mike
