It seems desirable for all hosts, regardless of platform, to store plugin
settings in the same format. Mayne that is not necceasry.

A feature of PTAF is that plugins can serialise thier internal state to a
buffer, file or similar. I guess these dont need to be portable, but it
might be useful.
