- Well, I don't do it before each cache. I don't have a check list, so I usually don't do it unless it looks like it is a bit flaky, and you can usually tell right off the bat. I use the compass A LOT. I don't find the calibration that annoying. I just don't think you should have to do it unless you change the batteries like the manual says. Knowing what I do about the unit after using it for almost a year, I would not hesitate to do it all over again.

I'm getting close to raising enough money to purchase one but now i'm wondering if I should reconsider. Having to recal before every cache seems a bit extreme.
Are there any other quirks I should know about?
I'd like to hear what those of you who use it think of it overall. What are the pluses and minuses in your opinions?

Thanks & God bless!

We use a 60CS as well, and the recalibration routine is now so ingrained
that we recalbefore every cache. No kidding - every one of them! We call
it "doing the geodance" because of the odd movements required (you 60
owners will identify I'm sure!).

Calibrating your electronic compass is good however should only be
needed when you change batteries in your gps. Also the dance movement
is not needed.... stand still and just turn the gps around in your
hands 2 times :-)
Well, that is the theory I know, but in practice, it just gets out of whack some times even when you don't change the batteries. And this is not the only time I have heard this. I saw it pop up on the 60CS forum as well, and I think I recall a few people saying they experienced the problem, but there was by no means a deafening chorus joining in. So I suspect it is not a universal problem, but only for a chosen few.

For what I paid for the thing, I keep a good grip on it and don't start twirling it in my hands O:-)  I actually did try it both ways, but when I spin, I calibrate my own internal compass too. That is required because sometimes I forget to create a waypoint for where I parked. :-(
