- I installed SP2 a while back and have had no problems. If I click on a site, sometimes a message will pop up in the tool bar asking me if I want to do that. The other thing is that the "Active X" security might be set too high (disabled), which isn't really bad. It is just for your protection. One thing you have to look for is a program that the "Game Show Channel" installs on your computer, as well as some other web sites, and that is "WildTangent". That will totally screw up your computer. Check your add-remove programs and see if it is listed there. If it is, then uninstall it and reboot. Even if it isn't, then open up windows explorer and in the tool bar click on tools-folder options- view tab and scroll down and change to show hidden files and then show file extensions. Then go to start-run and type in "*wildtangent" without the quotes and see if it is anywhere on your computer. If it is there, delete it. Then reset the folder options back to where they were. I have read that WildTangent has slipped by Ad-aware and Spybot. In Eric's case, he needs to start with the simple things, like what I mentioned, then check his internet explorer properties for the internet zone, and the advanced tab. Something may have been disabled that shouldn't have been. I have found that to be the case for some computers that I have worked on. Sometimes when defragmenting a file will be mysteriously lost or deleted when being moved. Eric can try system restore and see if that helps. The last thing is to uninstall SP2 and reinstall it. That will reinstall all of the dll files for internet explorer and outlook express. If he has dial up, it will take a long time. With my 3 meg speed, it took me 25 minutes to download and install. I do have the SP2 CD from Microsoft which cuts the time way down. Then you are only limited to the speed of your processor. If I knew what area where he lives, I could burn him a copy of SP2 and give it to him, if it comes down to that. The Microsoft knowledge base article is good, but he will have to back up his registry before he trys to make any changes, or his computer may end up "dead". Jim PS: I use Ad-aware, Spybot- which are passive programs, and Spyware Blaster and WinPatrol which are active programs (always running in the background). These are very good programs, and free. I check for updates every day. The "Tea Timer" should be activated in Spyware Blaster. --- tklnhl <sydstyr@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > - > While we're on the subject, I have a sad story.
