Not exactly grown-up geocaching related, but here is a way I used
geocaching concepts to develop an activity ...

I did an activity with a bunch of homeschool kids that were a little older
ranged in age from 5-8. I didn't send them off with GPSr but it was
geocaching and scavenger hunt inspired and they all wanted to do several
more.

I first went to the park and took digital pictures of 5 -6 good hiding
places. (Bleachers, park sign, big tree etc) These places became "The
Course." Some of the pictures were easier to figure out than others.

I bought a couple of sets of play plastic nuts, bolts and plastic wood at
the dollar store.

In each container (any kind will do, I used cottage cheese and butter tubs )
I sorted all the nuts into one, all the bolts into another, the fake pieces
of wood into a third etc.

There were ten kids so I printed out about 11 pictures of each hiding place.

This gets a tad complicated now ..

I decided in what order I wanted the kids to find each container. In the
first container I put the nuts and 10 pictures of the NEXT place to look for
a container. In #2 I put the bolts and pictures of the number 3 place to
look. In the last container I put the objects and the pictures of the first
container hiding place. The idea is the kid must collect one piece of the
"set" and then next picture/clue. when they are done then they hade two
bolts, two nuts, and one piece of wood. The picture clue tells them where
to look.

When they returned to the pavilion they had to pick a new "picture". this
picture was of the nuts and bolts put together in a specific way. Each team
had a different picture. The first team to collect all the pieces and
assemble the final project won.

These kids worked in teams of two. Each team started at a different
container. I handed out the extra picture of the hiding places to get them
started.

I also had another course and used small books as the final thing to
assemble. I got a set of 6 little board books at the dollar store. I ripped
the pages out and put a page from each book in each container. One book was
about farm animals, another about colors, etc. to start them out I handed
them the cover and a picture clue. They had to find their book page in each
container and then assemble the book in the right order.

For the younger kids you could make fewer hiding places and initially give
them all of the picture clues on a single sheet of paper. Sort of like a
map. Then each kid would have to take something out of the container, hang
on to it (oh yeah .. give each kid a ziploc bag to keep everything
together) and then assemble as directed.

In homeschool we logged this as math/critical and PE (we did several hunts
and each one had them running back and forth over a couple of soccer fields.

I'm definitely interested in hearing your activity worked out with the
preschoolers!

Nancy

mom takes 1 week out of about 6 or 7 weeks and teaches the preschool in
their home for 2 mornings, 9:30-12:00. Linda has been trying, as best she
can, to explain geocaching to the 4 and 5 year-old kids in the group. None
of them believed her, and this was a big source of contention. My wife is
teaching this week, and explained it in better detail to the group - now
they all want to try "geo-treasure-hunting". I'm thinking we can go to
Michaels and get seven little wooden boxes, stick a toy or two in each one,
and stash them around the St. Peters Tot Lot park. Then, each kid will get
a chance to follow the arrow, find their treasure, and keep it. I'll
probably do a quick FAQ for the kids to take home to their parents, along
with an invite to join our family on a cache trip sometime.

software, a carrying case, and a download cable for $199. Then, there's a
$50 mail-in rebate on top of that, putting the cost at around $150.

than my own. (A district is like a county) The district I went to was New
Horizons in which Jim Williams attends. I was making announcements for
Tiger Day (the annual cub scout event I put on out by Eureka). I made
announcements on the Boy Scout side first (in which I got to say hi to Jim)
then went over to the Cub Scout side. As I was waiting for my turn on the
Cub Scout side, the group was talking about activities that their packs
could do in the summertime. They named off various activities. Then they
talked about Geocaching. It seems there was a cacher in the crowd besides
me. Unfortunately, I could not stay until their meeting was over so I could
meet this cacher. (Maybe I already know him, but from where I was sitting I
could not see him.) There must have been over sixty adults there.

child friendly activity that cub scout packs could do together in the
summertime. Pretty soon, geocaching will be a household word. What do you
think? :)
