Depending of your intentions, you might find more rewarding to contribute to games that already use that free content. Two really nice games are Sauerbraten <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauerbraten_%28game%29> (Cube 2 engine) and Tremulous <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremulous> (Quake engine).


Sauerbraten has single player missions/deathmatch, and many multiplayer modes, including a real-time cooperative map editing. Tremulous gameplay is a very innovative form of deathmatch, and has a wider following.

For job seeking, having your name in the credits of good free software games is as good as a homebrew game of your own. For commercial development, I've seen that the Sauerbraten community does maps in coopedit just for the kicks. I'm sure you could find there a few talents for original map creation.
