dear friends,
our humble gathering was enlivened last night by several students, who
pitched in with ideas and with consuming cookies.
students are always welcome at our meetings, since the two groups' work
has much overlap.
pete white reported that $12,000 has been received from the Iovino
Family Foundation for the Nuevo well project, which is up and running.
another $12,000 is expected. the total is reimbursement for students,
who spent that amount over the past two years to make the project
happen.
marie baldwin and linda quinn proposed spending $400 for two of the "one
laptop per child" group's basic computers. for a limited time, friends
can decide who will receive one of the computers. the other laptop goes
to a child of the one-laptop organization's choosing in a developing
country. the group voted the funds. the web site of "one laptop" is
http://xogiving.org. linda's e-mail is lsquinn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
the group voted $200 for mike cipoletti as partial reimbursement for his
recent trip to nicaragua, during which he gathered information for the
group. mike is planning to move to nicaragua and is considering the
purchase of the Maryknoll nuns' home in leon. sister joan uhlen, who has
been in the country for decades, will be relocating to the united
states, the last of the maryknolls to leave. for more information about
mike's plans, e-mail him at ikecip@xxxxxxxx ashling ganes also plans to
spend some time in nicaragua next year and may help coordinate some of
friends/students activities.
the group is making a push for the students' "special gift" program for
the holidays. a mailing of the brochure will be made to all members of
friends, and boxes will be placed in stores. the idea is that instead of
a conventional gift, a donation can be made in the name of someone.
depending on the amount donated, gifts can include anything from a
machete to pillows and blankets for shelter residents to providing a
school classroom. for more information, e-mail pedro831@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
our next meeting is scheduled for thursday, jan. 3, at the high school.
an announcement will be sent closer to the date.
