well it is something worth trying out the next time we build a latrine.
is it a relatively simple process?

I could see putting a few of these in Nuevo to see how they go over.  I have seen this type of composting toilet in a peace community in Baltimore and it works well.  But someone has to take care of maintenance and emptying the urine container.  It is also possible to add a urinal (like some porta-potties) for men and boys to use without having to sit down and reduce the chances of peeing in the wrong place contaminating the dry portion.  However, there is not a problem of a high water table allowing contamination from the current latrines so I don't see an urgency in this.  If a house has a working latrine it would waste our limited resources to put in a new dry outhouse.  But might be way to go for future. I would certainly be easier to install than dig 10 or 20 feet holes in the hard ground of Nuevo.

This is information I got from my friend Rachel Lindsay (whose mother Peter met on his return from Nicaragua)

if you haven't already, look up DRY TIOLETS or BAÑOS SECOS.  They are exactly what communities like Nuevo Amanecer need.  They even could possibly be less work and money to build, and every year produce useable fertilizer.  If you are concerned about sanitation you can make ones with two chambers so the solids ferment an entire year before using.  I visited a small community north of Achuapa called Lagartillo, where a british brigade came and replaced all the normal drop outhouses with dry toilets, and everyone raves about them.  Honestly, the villagers all love them and have completely stopped using their drop toilets. Cleaner, don't smell, and their coffee plants are grown organically and thriving.  I was super impressed.
