Subject: [frgeek-michiana] VL-Hot and HAL

http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009/02/vl-hot-a-non-polling-alternati.html

I ran across this article that does a good job of explaining the differences
between VL-Hot and HAL (used for autodetection of removable devices.) It
also very clearly states that a limitation of VL-Hot is that it can not
automount an inserted CD like HAL can. I know this was a problem we ran into
at the warehouse. The author states that the extra polling that HAL does in
order to be able to automount a CD creates a noticable burden on the system.
I have my doubts that even on the older P3s we're using this would be
noticable. Regardless, I think the minimal cpu hit from HAL is worth not
having to train users how to mount a CD before they can open it.
