From your description I'm not sure what the problem is. Were you using a wifi or wired network connection? Wifi is a little more complicated to set up than a wired connection, but with both wired and wireless you have to tell Puppy to use dhcp (unless you have a fixed address). If you can get an address from dhcp networking should work.
If you want to have another go of it sometime I can show you how to do a frugal install that can coexist with VL 5.9. At the next LUG meeting (Wednesday, February 24 at the South Bend YMCA) I'll be giving a presentation on installing Puppy Linux.
