5. Video/Sound

Ubuntu chose 800x600 instead of 1024x768. The desktop gui utility fails to reconfigure X windows at 1024x768 so it can only be done manually. I think Mike pointed this out earlier.

I downloaded an AVI format video and tried to play it with the default movie player. Ubuntu automatically asked me if I wanted to install restricted files. I said 'yes', and the package manager downloaded and installed the minimum files to play the video. The libraries also suport mpg/mpeg videos.

The sound subsystem is not working. Fr. Robert fixed Marc's sound by disabling the modem. The sound and modem chip are the same chip, a DSP. The modem software had grabbed the DSP and wouldn't let go.

:: Video

The Ubuntu installer chose a refresh rate (85 Hz) that was too high to manage any resolution greater than 800x600. I lowered the refresh rate to 75 Hz and increased the resolution to 1024x768 using the desktop gui. Video works.

I needed Flash to vote for a friend's video submission in the the GoDaddy commercial contest. A Flash icon appeared on the blank screen. I clicked it. The browser landed at Adobe's Flash site, and a dialog box asked if I wanted to install third party software (didn't say "proprietary" or "unfree"). I said "yes", and Synaptic added the "third party" to the sources list (I think), downloaded Flash and installed it.

[If you'd like to help my friend win the contest and waste some time watching GoDaddy commercials:

1. Go to http://www.GoDaddy.com/Contest.
2. In the search box to the right of the Flash window, enter "Bryon DeVolder" or "Feeling Trapped". Press the Go button.
3. Give Bryon's commercial a 5 rating, please.

Bryon submitted two videos (a) Feeling Trapped: Comic Book Style, and (b) Feeling Trapped. He would like everyone to vote for the Comic Book version -- again, rate it 5 on the scale. You can vote once per day from any unique IP. The contest ends Friday.]

:: Sound

The Ubuntu installer apparently mutes the sound subsystem by default. I unmuted the sound and it works.
