His Nibs.com Update --
Hero 329
May 6th, 2006
This week sees the return of the classic Hero '329' --
the pen that launched His Nibs.com more than eight
years ago.
Last call for Lai Yee's Mother's Day pillows and
assorted calligraphy items, for shipping in time for the
holiday. A lot of boxes went out this past week
labeled "Do Not Open until Mother's Day!".
The Monteverde Mega continues to attract a lot of
attention, and our third waiting list grows daily.

Hero came out with a new version of the 329 about
two years ago, and after getting a sample I never
carried it. It's quality and design was a step down
from the original. Consequently, as my stock
dwindled, I had little hope of seeing this terrific
fountain pen value again.
Fortunately, I've located a limited stock in Asia, and
can once again offer all three colors of the original.
Although I must purchase the three colors in equal
quantities -- even though the colors have varying
popularity -- all three should be available for another
day or two :-).
My wife brought a burgundy 329 back from a trip to
Hong Kong in 1997, to add to my fountain pen
collection. This is the same pen that she -- and
millions like her -- grew up using in Hong Kong and
Mainland China. I was so impressed by the
quality/cost of this slim marvel that I asked her sister
to send me some more. I put a few up on the
nascent eBay, they sold like wildfire, and a few
months later I was in the pen business full-time!
Even
though these cost me much more now than they did
when I first imported them, I've kept the price the
same all of these years.
The stiff, x-fine nib that's the only option on the 329
is not for everyone. This nib was designed --
like most produced by Hero -- to handle the more
intricate writing required of Chinese and Asian
characters. However, those who love x-fine nibs,
artists, crossword puzzlers and those who just want
a sturdy knockaround pen that never seems
to run out of ink, have all adopted the 329 as a
favorite. A few of the many customer comments that
I've received over the years:
"Hi Norman, I wanted to thank you for the order. I
LOVE the Hero '329'!!!!! What a great little pen for
daily use. I'm using it today and it has been a
joy." L.F., Albert Lea, MN
"Norman, got back from San Diego yesterday and
discovered the pen waiting for me. *Incredible* is
the only way to describe it. The reviews on your
page about the 329's were not hyperbole at all- and
I was pleased to
note, the 329 IS much smoother than my Montblanc
ever was. Thanks for making these pens available! I
see why the Parker 51 was/is so popular. :)"
T.G., Colorado Springs, CO
"Hi Norman, I just received the Hero 329 today. I
have to say I'm very impressed with this pen. This is
my first Hero, and I really wasn't expecting much,
mostly because of the price of this pen, but I was
pleasantly surprised. The iridium-tipped nib and the
spring loaded clip are usually only found on pens
costing many times what you're charging for the 329.
It's a lightweight, well balanced pen with great looks
that writes very well, and the Aerometric style filler
works great! All in all, it's a great pen at an
unbelievable price. I will definitely be adding more
Hero pens to my collection. Thanks for the great
pen." T.P., Mtn Home AFB, ID

Monteverde Mega

I continue to receive nothing but wonderfully positive
feedback from all the customers that have now
received their
Mega pens...whether the large burgundy, or the very
large black ones.
It really seems that Monteverde has discovered a
whole new writing instrument niche, whether you
consider it a fountain pen with a rollerball tip, or a
rollerball that fills from an ink bottle like a fountain
pen!

On the blog...China Make Artificial Rain for Beijing
Not only does China make the Hero 329, but it seems
that they've now expanded their efforts:
"Chinese weather specialists used chemicals to
engineer Beijing's heaviest rainfall of the year, helping
to relieve drought and rinse dust from China's capital,
the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday."
