Ha ha Brian. So true. But not just any home PC. It HAS to be very specific
models from only ONE vendor. All the control system vendors have moved to
using PC's for their platforms. Most vendors have designed a system that
allows the customer the freedom to choose any vendors PC that meets a minimum
hardware spec., (usually RAM, CPU, and hard drive capacity). Those vendors
also utilize multiple cores built into the machines. Foxboro has always tied
their design to specific hardware and is the only control system vendor I know
that continues to go down a hardware specific path, especially to support their
MESH network. Sometime early in the MESH development design they advertised
that customers would be able to use commercial off the shelf, (COTS),
networking equipment for the proposed MESH. A bit later it appears that they
found they couldn't deliver sub-second failover for their Redundant Ethernet
Data Link, (REDL), and decided to go with hardware and firmware specific NIC's,
(Allied Telesys), and hardware and firmware specific switches, (Enterasys).

When I was working on a very large ABB 800xA installation a few years
back I realized that it was possible for control system vendors to design their
redundant Ethernet networks using COTS equipment for workstations, servers,
and switches.

Aren't we all so glad we are forced to run our industrial facilities on home
pc's and we support them with Ebay!

Hi Michael,

We don't have any lying about, but if you will get the Dell service code from a
typical machine, you can look up the specs/part number on the dell support
site. There will likely be a plethora of identical or similar boxes available
on Ebay. And yes, I realize that purchasing folks frown on Ebay, but when it's
that or a big heaping helping of nothing, Ebay's not so bad.
If you go that route, plan on about a 50% success rate on boxes purchased that
way. That sounds bad until you look at prices, and the average price on Ebay
for these boxes is less than $100. Save up, buy a dozen.

If anyone has P0923LT's sitting around and are willing to part with them, let
me know.
