An NVRAM is only good for 8-10 years, so if it's older it should be replaced. Third party packages that use the machine ID for licensing can be satisfied by a new NVRAM that has been programmed with the old machine ID. If you get programmed NVRAM, you don't need to re-license software that uses machine ID.
