domain name

Dear all,
If I want to use a smarthost for my exchange do i need to have in my
local domain the same domain name as the one I have registered on the
internet. I mean if my local domain is cotoso.com and I have register a
domain on the internet with a name fabricam.com can I use the smart host
for fabricam. to connect me emails and exchange server to the internet. or
it should be the same name for my internal domain and the registred domain
on the internet.
