Hi Robert, Don't get me wrong. I wasn't saying McAfee is better than Mail Essentials in any way. I have never used Mail Essentials so I can't compare.. I just listed the features that I like about McAfee. Reviewing the original request, I guess both McAfee and GFI are out of Marvin's budget. Marvin, you might want to try one of the free/low-cost 'personal' virus scanners and adapt it to your needs. Some of these work by acting as a 'mail proxy' (ie. You set your mail client to use 127.0.0.1 as the mail server, then set the REAL mail server within the program itself.). To run this sort of virus scanner on the same machine as exchange: 1> You must change the default SMTP port of the Windows/Exchange SMTP Service 2> You must set your virus scanner to forward all 'outgoing' mail to this 127.0.0.1 server (on the new port that you chose for Windows/Exchange SMTP service). This way, any incoming SMTP connections will be initiated with the Virus Scanner, NOT with Exchange directly. The virus scanner will then forward them to the Exch Server. You will have to do some extensive research into this, because most of these virus-scanners only allow incoming connections from the Localhost (this is to avoid relaying). You will need one that has configurable inbound filters. You WROTE MailSecurity... :-P I have never used MailSecurity myself, so I can't judge. We use McAfee Groupshield. It's literally a fire-and-forget virus scanner. Autoupdates, never fails (touch wood), viruses are blocked as they come in/go out plus a scan is done on all mailboxes nightly. We never had a single virus infection (again.. *Knock* *knock*) in 2 years. It is good, it got 3 different virus scan engines as well, not just 1 like all others. http://www.gfi.com/mailsecurity/ -----Original Message----- From: Marvin Cummings [mailto:marvc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 3:23 PM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] Virus for user email http://www.MSExchange.org/ What's the best way for me to protect my E2K mail server from potential virus' that may come from outside email? Lets say I run E2K at home and I allow incoming mail from the internet for a couple of my accounts and users. My network uses Norton 2000, but I don't have the email client of it. Anyone know of an "inexpensive" way of doing this? Any response is appreciated. I'm just a poor poor out of work admin trying to maintain his skills...:-> ------------------------------------------------------ You are currently subscribed to this MSExchange.org Discussion List as: robert@xxxxxxx To unsubscribe send a blank email to $subst('Email.Unsub') This mail was content checked for malicious code and viruses by GFI MailSecurity.
