Tom,
They don't advise against using agents. NT backup is a Microsoft
product, and is well integrated to work with Exchange. So is Veritas
Exchange backup agents. However, we have had a few problems in the past
in restore jobs using the agents. Especially restoring public folders.
That's how we switched our backup design to use NTbackup. And more, we
saved a bunch of money by switching to NTbackup, no more agents.

Read the following article for more info,

Is there a reason they don't support the remote agents.
i've been using them for years on Exchange 2k with no issue.
I assume since Veritas wrote NTBackup, using the remote agents would
pose no issue.

do you have a link to the article where MS advises against remote
agents?
thanks
