We did not have ANY trouble after applying SP2, in fact we saw noticeable
performance gains on our Exchange server after applying SP2.

Yes you can install service pack 1 without installing service pack 2.
Still before installing it, backup the exchange server cause it is
damaged or it goes down you can restore it to it's proper state.

Subject: [exchangelist] SP1 & SP2

Hi All,

Being new to Exchange 2000 I have asked several questions here and
you'all have responded nicely. Well, I have another. :-)
I inherited this site and the Exchange 2000 has had a few "patches"
applied but it does NOT have SP1 or SP2 applied.
My first question is: Is there any reason why I SHOULDN'T applies
these? I have searched around a bit and found people having some
problems after applying these... especially SP2.
My second question is: Since I am so far behind can I just apply SP2
and skip SP1?

Being so new I have been hesitant to apply these for fear of causing
Exchange to not work and me not being able to fix it. What precautions
should I take before applying?

Thanks so much,
Kelli
