LDAP port On Exchange Server 2000

Can anyone telnet to the LDAP port on Exchange Server 2000? from the cmd
window, you type telnet <servername> port 389... We are migrating from Exch5.5
to E2K
and one of our applications is looking for Exchange Server name and
supplies the 389 port.
Can anyone telnet to that port? I have heard that you can not (LDAP now
goes to the GC), but I need to confirm.
