Thanks, It looks as though a local guy replaced the external tape drive
and never restarted the system. A system restart with new drive seemed
to clear things up. Nice to be informed!

It was odd though that all other backup sessions ran at top speed but a
faulty SDLT would cause just the bricks to slow down to a snails pace.
We now have gone from 6mb/min to 75mb/min for bricks backups as of last
evenings backups. Its still a little slower than other similar field
offices but gets done before morning. We normally only run this on
Friday evenings due to the long times bricks can take. We will be
looking to do db maintenance soon to see if this brings us back normal
speed.

Via Computer Associates:
.................................................................
The Brick-Level backup scans the entire Exchange Information store
(IS),
enumerates each mailbox, and then each individual message, and
associated
attachments.

This results in backup times that are significantly slower than an IS
backup,
which is backing up the whole database, and not enumerating individual
objects within it.

If your backup is unable to complete in the allotted time you may wish
to
consider backing up just those mailboxes which are most important, or
those
that perhaps are most likely to require a restore.

----I am currently utilizing the Deleted Item Recovery and Deleted
Mailbox
Recovery and only doing brick-level backup on the weekend.

The database may need a defrag, or there's antivirus software making
the
backup extremely slow.

We are running Exchange 2003 SP1 on Windows 2003. We have one field
office
server that the bricks level backups are running very slow. At about
6mb/min.
We are using ArcServe 11.1 with the Exchange agent. We have this
configuration in 40 other offices and get around 100mb/min with bricks.
All
systems have single SDLT drives connected to them.

This particular site had the tape unit replaced and still the same
slow
speeds on bricks only backups. DB backups run at over 1gb/min.

Could this be an issue with the Exchange database needing maintenance
or a
virus software issue?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks
