Another possibility is Of Mice and Men. It has two versions: a novel
version and a version that John Steinbeck later adapted for the stage. But
even the novel version can be used, first of all because you can read a play
OR a novel, and second of all, the novel itself contains so much dialogue
that it almost like a play and can easily be read in class. The advantages
are that it is short, and its themes of loneliness, friendship, and
victimization of those who are different
appeal to the kids. I've taught it twice and have gotten good feedback
from the pupils. The disadvantages are that it is very sad, there is a
great deal of slang, racist epithets and "foul language" if that upsets you
(the kids get a kick out of the fact that the book has been banned in
several U.S. states for those reasons!) , and there is a certain amount of
farm terminology whose meanings I myself had no idea of, (so you get a
version with a glossary ). Another possibility is Twelve Angry Men, a play
which I have never taught but always mulled around in my mind as something I
might want to teach. It's about a group of twelve men on a jury who have to
decide if a man is guilty of murdering his father or not. And another
possibility is The Crucible, which I have taught a few times to English
Speaker classes. The play becomes more interesting when you bring in the
allusions to the McCarthy era in the 40s and 50s in the US and show a good
film about that period in American history (such as "Guilty by Suspicion"
with Robert DeNiro). The kids (the more naive ones among them) are often
amazed that such things could occur in the Great Democratic United States of
America. Or of course Death of A Salesman, which in my opinion is Arthur
Miller's best play. I'd love to hear other suggestions. Regards,
Maxine Tsvaigrach
