Our school uses the Winter Bagrut a lot - mainly for other subjects, not English. The teachers who teach for the Winter Bagrut get paid for the whole year, but they teach double the number of hours in the first semester. Or if they teach two subjects, they teach massive numbers of hours for one test in the winter and then massive number of hours for the other test in the other subject for summer -- and then have fewer classes. This is done with mabar and etgar classes, not with the iyuni. It's so the kids have fewer subjects to study and less to keep track of and fewer papers to lose. Also, they get to take lots of matkonot so by they time they do the bagrut, they are ready and pass. It's also done so if they fail in the Winter, they do it again in the summer. The teacher continues teaching those who failed, but not for as many hours as before the Winter Bagrut - and not voluntarily. In English, the Winter Bagrut is used only for kids who want to improve their grades from the previous summer. In this case, the kids who took E or A or C at the end of Yud Aleph and want to try to improve their grade would retake in the winter. Michele
