Dear Rivka,

I LOVED your idea of the unusual job project - I hope you let us know how
it turns out.

Regarding the grading, personally, I find that if my rubrics are good, the
grading is a breeze (same as with a test, really - if my criteria are clear,
grading isn't a problem.) And for the period of time that they are doing
the project, I have NO planning and no marking (quizzes, homework) to do for
that class. OK, I work like a banshee BEFORE hand to prepare it, but if you
do that with a colleagues, it is easier and much more pleasant. Both of the
projects I am doing this year in class I have planned and am running with
colleagues with whom I feel comfortable and work well (i.e. friends) which
makes the whole process more enjoyable. In my 11th grade 5 point project,
since our classes are both 5 points, we allowed the kids to work in groups
of 3's with kids from the parallel class, as well. This they REALLY liked!

I agree with every word you said about the oral assessment. If you spread
it out over a few weeks, one or two presentations a lesson, the audience
(rest of class) won't get bored, and you will have an activity in Access to
Information from a Spoken ext (iow: listening comprehension) every lesson
without you having to prepare it! The trick is to think of a way to give the
kids something to focus on. Maybe you could have the group presenting
prepare 5 questions that each learner must answer while listening to the
presentation. Or, you could have them all peer assess the presentations
(which I would like less, since that would mean an awful lot of work for me,
evaluating that somehow, and working that into the presenters' grades).

The most important thing for us, as teachers at this point, IMHO, is that WE
learn from what we are doing, by planning carefully, doumenting carefully,
adjusting when and as needed, and SAVE the projects (don't forget to PIE
them) so that in coming years, we can recycle and reuse. Think about how
easy THAT will be, when we all have a repertiore of projects, which we are
comfortable with, and have ironed out the glitches, and don't have to make
them up each year!

See y'all at ETAI!

Adele
