I've been trying to follow the arguments for and against the HOTS program and I'm still confused about one major point. There are quite a few vocal teachers who claim the program is wonderfuldespite..etc etc. But,I'd like to leave the teachers'compensation out of this for a minute. My main criticism is that I forsee a drastic change in the ability of the students to move up and down in the system. My students are "on the move". Until the day of the Bagrut itself, I can't be certain what tests each of the students is going to do. They might prepare for 5 points, but go down to 4 in the end. They might insist on 4 and in the end only go into 3. Every class has a mixture as is and matconot are done for numerous modules in each class. In addition, there are always a few students who complete all the tests in 11th grade- not necessarily English speakers, but students who want to complete as much as possible because they are thinking of completeing high school early for various rea sons. These students who for whatever reason don't fit into the conventional system won't be able to function as they have until now. I tried asking the teacher who taught my course what can be done for them, but I got nothing of an answer. The system is built for the conventional student/school- not for those who are in danger of dropping out or even for the opposite ones who can jump forward. Our school will do the log as we want to choose the literature pieces but I see no difference in the problem as far as the log or the exam goes. Both are built for frontal ,classroom teaching and leave no room for the "exceptional" student. As I see the picture, not only will there be a huge amount of extra work in the program, there will be an unbearable amount of individulual work for these students- because we can't just send them off to a private teacher to complete the work. It'll fall on their teachers- or they simply won't wait for the end of 12th to finish English. _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Friends get your Flickr, Yelp, and Digg updates when they e-mail you. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/social-network-basics.aspx?ocid=PID23461::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-xm:SI_SB_3:092010 ----------------------------------------------- ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org or - http://www.etni.org.il ** ** for help - ask@xxxxxxxx ** ** to post to this list - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** -----------------------------------------------
