Of course, it's altogether a problem to follow ANYone without thinking
things through thoroughly {how's that for a tongue-twister?!} -- no matter
whether it's a rep of the establishment or someone who purports to be
looking out for our "rights." (Teacher have rights?!! Maybe in the US,
with a powerful union like the UFT.) Anyway, we've had enough HOTS training
to realize the importance of thinking for ourselves!
Everyone has their particular slant on the issues of the day for whatever
reasons, so we have to find a workable solution, which isn't necessarily the
same for all of us -- unless we're supposed to operate as some sort of clone
of the Ministry / Inspectorate (the distinction is rather fuzzy here; after
all, it's the Inspectorate that creates the programs the Ministry tells us
to follow. Please correct me if I'm wrong).
In a different post, Adele mentioned that thanks to HOTS, everyone is now
teaching literature, whether or not they like it. That worries me because I
wouldn't want my child or grandchild to learn lit with teachers who aren't
enthusiastic about what they're teaching and are possibly following the lit
program like robots. But I don't want to rehash an old controversy as that
would be pointless, so I'll just say this: Did it occur to anyone that the
problem might be the program, not the lit. itself? And even if one loves
the program, doing it properly doesn't guarantee good enough results to
justify the (bordering on abusive) hours and hours of work teachers must
invest (even if they "share" unit planners) -- at least not from what I've
observed. Let's not kid ourselves, with the possible exception of the
summative assessment parts of the log, there is little original, well
thought-out work there.
Adele certainly has a point about the significance of literature in
learning English (many of us were saying that for years before the advent of
HOTS), but Ron Erez has a valid point too: he's responding to the appeals of
unfairly overworked teachers who do not see the fruits of their labor.
Clearly, it's time for a change!
Chodesh tov and Shabbat Shalom,
Batya

Barry: I am a teacher AND a counselor (as are ALL counselors in the field)
and I can attest to the fact that I have finally stopped talking to myself
(and people have stopped looking at me strangely... so I guess that's a
good thing).
Thank you for that , Barry , framing the situation in the way the whole
thing is being handled: Theater of the Absurd.
On a more serious note, Ron Erez is making us educators as successful as
the government is, in making peace in the Middle East. Don't we always
tell
our students to TALK about their disagreements, rather than FIGHT about
them - or play "brogez" and not talk to each other at all? By following
Ran Erez, Irgun teachers are not bettering our cause - they are getting us
all stuck in the mud.
Counselors are here BECAUSE we are veteran, experienced teachers, chosen
for our expertise and sent to other schools to share our insights and
HELP.
The stupid directive of not agreeing to talk to us advances nothing, helps
no one and just makes the teachers lives harder.
I am happy to say that aside from one school, NONE of my other school
visits have been cancelled, because when I ask them if they are not
following irgun directives, they say "heck no!" We need your help! And as
Rakezet shiluvit, in charge of the kitvei minui for oral testing, NONE of
my schools have "forgotten" how to contact me (in fact, any way they could
think of: phone, email, FB messenger, whats App, SMS... you name it -
contact THRIVES!) SO enough with the hypocrisy!
STOP follow Ran Erez off cliffs like lemmings, and start using common
sense
in settling this. (As it is all of you who are Irgun and not grading
literature because you are "following directives" can FORGET about
Passover
vacations, because it is NOT going to be cancelled for the 12th graders,
and you WILL have to send in literature grades. )

Dear Etni-Ites:
Those of you in Irgoon Khamorrim have probably received a letter that
looks sumthinג€™ like this:
ג€‹ ......
ג€‹.
These questions and others like them will keep us occupied during the
long non ג€“card- punching ,contact refusing,
survey abstaining, alternative assessment-balking days that lie
formidably ahead.
