QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"If we had to overcome every possible objection before we got started, then
nothing -- absolutely nothing -- would ever get accomplished."
- Richard Carlson -

This quote popped up as the quote of the day. It seems to suit the general
discussion on the NBA.

The classes I choose to teach are usually Mabar and Etgar classes and their
reaction at the beginning is... "but we don't know how to read and we don't
know how to write". When they have a final product of work or a poster on
the wall, they are so proud of themselves.

I did projects with a class of Learning Disabled pupils (3 points) all of
which were entitled to a cassette. We brainstormed topics in class. After
they chose the topic they had to write a few sentences saying why they had
chosen that particular subject.

Next step was to look for articles on the subject. Some took material in
Hebrew and summarised it in English. Summarising - not an easy skill,
neither is translation.

They pulled out pictures and wrote captions for them.
So their file contained:
a cover page
 a table of contents
an introduction
articles
pictures and captions
a conclusion

One girl in the class chose a singer and one of the things she did was to
interpret the message of one of his songs.

We worked on this for about 6 weeks only once a week. I felt that weaker
learners find changes difficult and if I stopped the regular work
completely, it would be very difficult to get them back to the routine once
they had finished their projects.

To be honest with you, this was prior to the NBA. It was meant to solve a
problem of "Sha'at Effes" where each time different kids showed up. When
the kids absent heard what we were doing, they started coming as well.

That became my easiest lesson of the week.

All the best,

Miriam Greif
