Report: Some 40% of teachers earn less than average wage

Some 40 percent of teachers earn salaries NIS 1,500 less than 
the average monthly national wage, a Finance Ministry report 
said on Monday.

The report on public sector spending for 2003, released on 
Monday by treasury wages director Yuval Rachlevsky, 
highlighted the low salaries earned by Israeli teachers and 
found salary irregularities among 14 percent of the institutions 
surveyed.
 
Teachers' real wages in 2003 dropped 6.5 percent compared 
to 2002.
 
The report also revealed that more than 40 percent of teachers 
earned low or very low salaries. Twenty-eight thousand one 
hundred teachers, 37 percent of the nation's total, earned an 
average of NIS 5,500 per month. This salary is NIS 1,500 less 
than the average national salary. Another 3,487 teachers earned 
average monthly salaries of NIS 3,930.
