Sorry, I failed to mention where exactly Grandview Lane is. It isn't far from Hooper Lane if you know where that is. From I-26 go past the airport about 4 miles to where NC 191 turns off to the left at a stoplight where there is a Marathon Station. Turn left onto 191 (there is a left turn lane there) and continue past VanWingerden, Hooper Lane, and the Water Treatment Plant, cross the French Broad River and make the first right turn after you cross the river where there is a sign for the French Broad Baptist Church. Park in the church lot and look out towards Mt Pisgah (beautiful view from this location, which I'm sure is how Grandview Lane got it's name). The river is down where the tree line is. The cranes were down by the last ditch before the river. As I said, though, they weren't there when we returned home. They may still be hanging out around in the area though, or they may have been down in the ditch as they did disappear down there a few times while we were watching them. March is a good time to look for migrating Sandhill Cranes. They like to eat in the big corn fields along the river. Biltmore is also a good place to look for them. So keep an eye out for them. Also forgot to mention, there were at least 4 Horned Grebes on Lake Julian as well.
