While in the Unicoi Mountains (Graham County) yesterday at ~11AM, Allen Ratzlaff, Sheryl Bryan, Katherine Caldwell, and I observed a meadowlark on the side of the Cherohala Skyway at the Unicoi Gap overlook (very near the NC-TN line) at an elevation of 4,470 feet. It flew low across the road, landing briefly. It then flew back and forth across the road twice more. It was landing in the small mowed (and muddy) patches of grass around the parking area and rock wall. The surrounding landscape is heavily forested. It was raining and generally foul weather (40s) at the time. Chris Kelly Asheville, NC
