It was my first trip to the Mills River Water Treatment Plant, hopefully to see the reported Red-necked Grebes. They were there but difficult to see, the morning sun created terrific glare from the viewing area, and any color on the Grebes was almost invisible. I watched them swimming around sometime fairly close to the near side fence. Other more common species were also present, including several Scaups and Mallards. Tree Swallows (I think) swooped the water for insects. On down Hooper Lane, I was lucky to see a Northern Harrier, being chased by a crow. At Lake Julian a nice Pied-billed Grebe was swimming around near the boat dock. All in all it was a good day, like a song (sparrow). Alan Lenk
